Transformer Test System

Eaton

Develop a system to Dry Type Distribution Transformers used in commercial power distribution.  The system requirements included the  following standards for transformer testing:

  • IEEE C57.12.01-1998
  • IEEE C57.12.91-2001
  • NEMA TP1
  • NEMA TP2
  • NEMA ST20
  • 10 CFR Part 431 (April 27th, 2006)

And includes the following tests:

  • Resistance Measurements – windings on rated voltage tap
  • Ratio Measurement – all taps – voltage and current
  • Polarity / Phase Relation / Phase Shift Measurements
  • No Load Losses & Excitation Current Measurements
  • Impedance Voltage & Load Loss Measurements
  • Dielectric Test – Applied and Induced Voltage
  • Efficiency Testing

Each test must be selectable by quality or engineering based on product family and transformer rating.  The system had to have the capability to store these test configurations for reuse as well as making them editable from a user interface.

There were several challenges with this project that started with the variety of products and the wide range of power requirements across all transformers.  This included the high voltage and current requires for the ratio and load tests.  In addition to the power tests, the system had to incorporate a single connection to the UUT philosophy.  This required a high voltage, high current custom switch matrix to be included in the system allowing the system to provide the necessary connections to the various taps on the transformer.

G2 Technologies developed the system using National Instruments embedded data acquisition, software technologies, and G2 Technologies dTRAK™ platform to create the Transformer Test System.  High voltage contactors and relays were used to provide the switching capability needed to test the variety of connection possibilities with each transformer.

Once all tests were completed the complete data set was written to G2 Technologies dTRAK ™ system and the results were displayed on the screen for the operator.
